The Georgia Southern women's soccer team (0-12-0, 0-5-0) fell to the Citadel Bulldogs (4-8-0, 1-3-0) Thursday, Oct. 8, at Eagle Field. The Eagles are ranked last in the Southern Conference while the Bulldogs sit at the 11th spot.

The Eagles playoff hopes are not within grasp as they continue to suffer in a winless season. The Eagles put a strong second half performance by scoring a goal, but could not match up against the two points scored by the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs got right to work as they opened the match with a shot on goal and a corner kick, but missed both. Senior Goalkeeper Laurent Santos made her first save from a kick by Nikkita Persaud in the third minute of the game and her second came shortly after from a corner kick shot by Nicole Martinoli.

The Eagle offense started out a little slow in the first half. The Bulldogs were a huge threat near the goal, as they outdid the Eagles in shot attempts. Sophomore midfielder Chelsea Kephart took three shots, putting one on target to pave the way for the GSU offense. They were able to maintain control of the ball and earned a corner kick.

Danae Kaimuloa assisted Kephart in the setup for a header. Kephart placed the shot on target, forcing Whitney Nave to make a save.

The Bulldogs missed two opportunities to score, but Loughran eventually found the back of the net with a shot from the box in the first half. The Citadel took three more shots after the goal forcing three more saves by Santos.

Loughran added her second goal and gave the Bulldogs a two goal advantage in the 29th minute.

GSU went back on the attack after the second goal and recorded four shots in a 13 minute period. Kephart recorded two of those shots.

Sophomore forward Sara Oland achieved her first goal of the season five minutes into the second half. Jenny Anderson set up the goal with a nice cross pass into the box.

The Eagle defense stepped up and put pressure onto the Bulldogs led by sophomore Christy Naife and senior Kate Boardman.

The Eagles will make a trip to South Carolina to face College of Charleston on Sunday at 2 p.m. before returning to Eagle Field for their last two home games. At home, GSU will play against Furman, Oct. 16th, and Wofford, Oct. 18th.

Women's Soccer - time for a wake-up call?
Srdev 10-13-2009 10:45 am EDT

Is anyone minding the store in the Women's Soccer program? A program that hasn't been very good in recent memory had literally fallen apart, and now stands at 0-13 with 5 games left. They haven't won a game since October of 2008!

From the coaches, to Sam Baker, to the players, it seems like they are all asleep at the switch. To a spectator, it seems obvious, it is time to drastically change things! Obviously, whatever coach Hart and her staff are doing is not working. Is AD Baker going to start demanding some changes?

This is particularly sad, considering that Georgia has one of the best youth soccer programs in the southeast US, regularly feeding players to some of the best college teams, often outside Georgia. Consider for a moment that GA girl soccer teams regularly beat their counterparts from South Carolina. Yet GSU has lost every game against SC colleges in the past two years. Most of these SC rosters are filled with Georgia players.

So, come on coach! Let's go AD! You've got some great talent right here in the state. It is time to change your training, change your attitude, your coaching and your recruiting (for next year), and get to winning some games!
