Henderson: Is it a library or a day care?

As school is now in full swing and midterms have arrived, I have found myself in the library more than I desire. I used to enjoy going to the library to get work done because it was a refuge from noise and distractions. I am now finding my refuge tainted with non-students.

Recently I have noticed an increasing problem with local residents and/or their kids using the university library. It bothers me to know that our tuition money is benefiting those who are not even enrolled here.

For example, this past Sunday I was spending the afternoon preparing for tests I had coming up. I found it hard to focus when there were four people sitting around me under the age of 15. If that wasn’t enough, the mom was then instructing her oldest child to help his younger sibling with his homework. The constant request from the mother to her kids to be quiet was another distraction. This is just one of many occurrences I have experienced over the past few weeks.

Sometimes I wonder how our school can afford to pay people to walk around all day, and sometimes night, to write parking tickets to students but cannot afford to have someone patrol the library.

It’s a shame when students, who pay tuition, cannot access a computer because little Sally was checking to see when the new Miley Cyrus movie was coming out. This has been brought to the attention of the people working here. When something is said to the non-students, they just move to another floor.

By looking at my fellow students and seeing their constant stares and moans, I know I am not the only one who feels this way. That’s why I am issuing a challenge to the “powers that be” to do something to solve this ridiculous issue.

Yes, but...

As a librarian (not at GSU) I feel your pain, but... you don't really believe your tuition pays for the complete cost of your education, do you? Where do you think the rest of the support comes from? Taxes -- state, local and federal taxes paid by that noisy mother and her neighbors. So why shouldn't they get some of the benefit if they're paying some of the costs?

Thank you Jeff for bringing this issue to light, as I have been frustrated with this for a long time.

In response to the previous comment, perhaps local citizens who are not students should be able to use the library's computers however, everyone at the library, regardless of age should be courteous of others and follow basic library manners.

I don't know exactly how the university should handle this but something must be done.
Library use should be reserved for authorized user

Since when did the GSU library become the designated gathering spot for unauthorized users to spend an afternoon, make noise or take up computer time?

The argument that "they pay taxes, so they should be able to use it", is just plain silly. My taxes pay for the White House, the CIA, the Georgia governor's mansion, public schools, hospitals, and many other public buildings, where I can't simply walk in uninvited and make use of their resources. Maybe that author thinks it should also be OK for someone to walk in off the street and come to a GSU dorm and take a nap in one of the rooms, since their taxes pay for some of those costs as well.

Having unauthorized people using scarce library or any other university resources, should not be allowed. If these kids and their mother are not engaging in authorized research, then security should be called to escort them off the premises.

Furthermore, the library staff should make the computers available only through the use of a valid GSU ID or a guest pass for authorized non-students.

Why can't the public use computers and other resources at Statesboro's PUBLIC library??
