Proposed Statesboro City Park to raise community involvement PDF Print E-mail

Bulloch County Commissioners heard a proposal for the building of a city park Tuesday night.

The current plan drawn up by Allen Muldrew contains a grassy activity space which would be beneficial to Georgia Southern University students.

“Some green space for activities and we would love the college to take advantage of these kinds of things. One of the things was some kind of an amphitheater, doesn’t have to be it, it could be nothing more than a green lawn with a stage," said Muldrew. "Just something that allows folks to come and enjoy and hang out. As well as maybe a small  playground or picnics."
Muldrew hopes the park will be located in the downtown area of Statesboro.

“What we’re trying to do is take some of the blighted or some of the ‘needs improvement’ property in and around downtown and make it what we like to call a green infrastructure,” said Muldrew.

Councilman John Riggs said that the funding for the park would come from Special Purpose Local Option Sales Taxes. This tax would be a one percent increase on goods and services bought in Statesboro.

“The SPLOST vote will be voted on in November. What’s good about SPLOST is we don’t just raise taxes, we give people a chance to vote on it,” said Riggs.

Muldrew said the park would feature different types of attractions for all the residents of Statesboro, not just GSU students.

“The main tenant would be a farmer’s market. We have an extremely successful farmer’s market. We’ve got some ideas, nothing is solid right now we’re just dreaming as big as we can. We would like some kind of passive water park...something to cool off,” said Muldrew.

Muldrew said that Bulloch county did not commit to the plan but that he has a strong commitment from the city of Statesboro.
