The Georgia Southern University women’s tennis team won against both Presbyterian College and Mercer University while playing away matches on Feb. 4 in Clinton, S.C., and Feb. 5 in Macon, Ga. The team is now 2-2 for the spring season. The Eagles defeated Presbyterian 6-1 for their first win of the season, coming away with eight out of nine match victories. The Eagles secured the doubles point after sweeping all three of the matches played against Presbyterian. In No.1 doubles, teammates Alexis Prickett and Natalie Maffett secured an 8-3 set win. Paola Garrido and Mimi Bollaci followed in No.2 doubles with an 8-2 win. The No. 3 pair, consisting of Cameron Williams and Taylor Jones, defeated its opponents 8-3, concluding the doubles competition sweep for the Eagles. On the singles court, the Eagles continued their drive, winning five of the six matches. Williams defeated her opponent in both sets 6-1 at No.6 singles play. At No.2 singles, Prickett won both sets 6-2 and 6-1. For No.1 singles, Garrido continued her personal winning streak with set wins, scoring 6-2 and 6-1. Garrido, 8-0, has yet to loose a match against the competition so far this season in both single and double play. Finishing up single play competition, Allison Beller, at No.5, secured a close match victory of 7-6 along with Caitlin Kitchen playing at No.3, also coming away with a 7-6 win against her opponent. Continuing their strong play in Macon, the Eagles defeated the Bears 6-1 with five out of six match wins in singles and two out of three match wins for doubles. The Eagles achieved the doubles point beginning the match with an 8-1 win by Williams and Jones. Following at the No.2 spot, Garrido and Kitchen shut out the Bears 8-0. Successes in singles proved strong beginning with No. 1 Beller, who won both sets 6-1 and 6-0 against her opponent from Mercer. Alexandra Langmo, at No. 6 singles, achieved her first match win of the season 6-0, 6-0. No. 5 Williams, No.3 Kitchen and No. 1 Garrido each secured second wins for the day in their singles brackets as well. After suffering losses in the first two matches of the season against Charleston Southern University, 1-6, and Coastal Carolina University, 3-4, it seems the Eagles have found their momentum. The Eagles will host South Carolina State University at the Hanner Tennis Complex on Feb. 18 for the first home match of the season, beginning at 10 a.m.
