Hewitt leads Eagles to victory PDF Print E-mail

As the Georgia Southern men’s basketball team defeated Furman University on Monday night, one thing became evidently clear — sophomore guard Jelani Hewitt is on a tear.

Hewitt has led the team in scoring in its last four games, all wins for GSU. He tallied 16 points in the win over the Paladins, proving to be the difference that the Eagles didn’t have in their meeting earlier in the season. The sophomore guard only went 1-5 in the 64-54 loss on Jan. 19.

Hewitt has shot an average of 53 percent in the team’s last four wins, and has averaged 18 points per game in the Eagles’ last four games.
He has taken over the scoring load from sophomore guard Eric Ferguson, whose points per game has dipped a bit as of late.

Hewitt has also seen his points per game average for the season rise steadily through the four-game span from 9.4 points per game, before the game against Samford University, to 10.9 as of Monday night.

He is shooting an impressive 42 percent from the three-point line, including hitting five shots from beyond the arc in the game against Samford.
Hewitt has not only been good during regulation, but in crunch time as well. Against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, he hit a game-winning three-pointer as time expired to give GSU the 75-72 win.

Hewitt will need to be a proficient scorer in the Eagles’ next five games, especially in the season finale against conference leader Davidson College.
