The Georgia Southern University baseball team won two of three games against Western Carolina University over the weekend.

The Eagles were able to clinch a spot in the Southern Conference tournament with Saturday’s win. This series also finishes up the Eagles final home games of the 2012 season and they finish with a respectable 19-10 home record.

Friday. Game one. WCU 4-0. WIN-Smith (4-4) LOSS-Beck (4-7)

The Eagles were shut out and only able to record five hits in the opening game of the series. WCU’s Jordan Smith threw a complete game shutout while striking out four hitters.

Junior starting pitcher Chris Beck struggled out the gate for the Eagles. Allowing 10 hits in just over four innings of work.

The Wildcats left 13 runners on base, passing up a chance to really put some offensive numbers on the board versus GSU.

Freshman Hunter Thomas was the only Eagle to record multiple hits as he finished the game going 2 for 3 at the plate.

Saturday. Game two. GSU 16-4. WIN-Hess (4-3) LOSS-McKinney (6-3)

A day after only recording five hits and zero runs, the Eagles’ offense exploded to record a double-digit win over the Wildcats in the two teams 100th meeting.

The Eagles recorded 18 hits for 16 runs, including sophomore Garren Palmer’s first homerun of the season in the second inning.

Junior T.D. Davis finished the game going 4 for 5 at the plate and he also scored four runs. Thomas recorded two hits and drove in four of the Eagles’ runs. There were six GSU hitters that recorded multiple hits; just one game after Thomas was the only player to record two hits.

This win clinches a spot in the Southern Conference tournament for the Eagles.

Sunday. Game three. GSU 2-1. WIN-Leverett (4-1) LOSS-Null (4-4) SAVE-Rowe (5)

After a three-hour rain-delay on Mother’s day and senior day at J.I. Clements Stadium, the Eagles were able to pick up the victory and win the series against the Catamounts.

WCU scored the first run of the contest in the fourth inning, but GSU was able to rally back in the bottom of the fifth and score the two runs that were enough to take the game.

Thomas, Davis, and freshman Chase Griffin all recorded two hits for the Eagles. While Davis and senior Eric Phillips drove in the two runs for GSU.

The Eagles will travel to play Kennesaw State University in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday starting at 6 p.m. Then the Eagles will travel to face Wofford College in the final three games of the regular season of the weekend beginning on Friday and then a double header on Saturday.
