Most Statesboro bars open on Super Bowl Sunday PDF Print E-mail

Many bars in Statesboro are going to be open this Sunday to celebrate the Super Bowl, and many are offering specials for the occasion.

Until recently, bars have been unable to sell alcohol on Sunday. The passage of Sunday alcohol sales has opened many opportunities for local bars, including being able to take advantage of the excitement surrounding the Super Bowl.

“We’ve got a thirteen-foot projection screen. If you buy five oysters, you get a sixth for free, and it’s happy hour all day on Sunday,” Haleigh Mines, server at Gnats Landing, said.

“We will have our daily special of two-dollar single well and three-dollar doubles. The Super Bowl will be playing on all of our TVs,” Sylvia Taylor, a server at Manny's Neighborhood Grille, said.

Some establishments will not be capitalizing on the occasion.

“We’re not doing anything special, but we’ll be open,”  Jim Lanier, owner and general manager of Loco’s Grille and Pub, said. “Super Bowl Sunday has always been a slow day, but hoping being able to sell alcohol on Sunday will change that.”

“We’re still closed on Sunday,” Scott Bacon, a bartender at Dingus, said.

GATA’s Sports Bar and Grille, formerly Buffalo’s Café, and Kbob Kelly’s will be offering more than specials.

“We’re doing a whole lot. We’re going to have a beer-and-brat special, we’re going to have six dollar bud light beers all day and a lot more,” GATA’s general manager, Mike Hall, said.

“It’s going to be called GATA’s Ginormous Super Bowl Extravaganza. We’re initiating our eating competition, called The GATA Challenge. It’s going to be ten super-hot wings, and if you can finish them in the allotted time you’ll get a prize. It’s not all finalized, so there will be more details to come, so check the GATA Nation Facebook page,” Hall said.

Brian Kelly, the owner, said Kbob Kelly’s is going to be throwing a party beginning with a trivia game that will start when the bar opens. They will also be serving free oysters along with a variety of specials, including $1 20-ounce beers, $2.75 shots, $1.75 Bud Lite and Miller Lite and $2 well doubles.
