Creative writers, lyricist and poets will all come together as Georgia Southern University’s Random Acts of Poetry club gathers this spring to ignite the writer in all those in attendance. Meeting in the College of Business Administration building on Thursdays at 7 p.m., the group sets out to bring writers of all types together in hopes of giving students a way to release their emotions. “We’re an organization on campus that contains writers, poets, lyricists — any type of writer,” senior information technology major and member of Random Acts of Poetry Xavier Green said. Associate professor Theresa Welford and president Ayana Moore work hard to ensure that students are able to freely express themselves. Starting as an un-established organization last year, Random Acts of Poetry kicked off this season at the end of January as an “actual organization.” This offers students an extracurricular activity as well as practice for writing classes. The group of musicians and other creative writers “aim to nurture the artistic skill of anyone willing to join,” according to the group’s Orgsync page. Encouraging students to break out and become known writers, the group posts poetry on Facebook and videos on YouTube to display its members' talents to all. When sitting in a room full of similar people, this opportunity encourages members to be themselves. “There are no disclaimers on what we write. We’ll show you the utmost respect,” Green said. Students who come and join this club will be able to experience and learn from fellow writers with similar interests as themselves. “(Random Acts of Poetry) are students who share a love and passion for poetry, music and words in general.”
