Statesboro may seem like an unlikely spot for the fashion scene, but Georgia Southern University students are finding trendy clothes at shops all around this small city. Price plays a big role in choice places to shop, so students look for places that will not hurt their pockets while also offering them the variety they want. “I like to get good deals. I like to get a lot for my dollar,” sophomore Spanish major Haley Todd said. According to students on campus, Goodwill is a great place to find fashionable one-of-a-kind clothing, but it does require some work in searching. “I got a sweater for three (dollars) ninety-nine (cents) and a printed jacket that was six (dollars) ninety-nine (cents),” Natasha Benefield, junior fashion merchandising and apparel design major, said about her findings. “I got four items — it was sixteen dollars all together.” Being one of the bigger stores here in Statesboro and a place where clothes are sold for less than department store prices, it is no surprise that TJ Maxx is also on the list for where students get their fashionable finds. “They just have a big variety, whether it’s purses, shoes or pants. They pretty much have it all in one central location,” Kiley Lightle, a junior biology major, said. The Statesboro Mall, which students sometimes refer to as the “small,” offers a small selection of stores where GSU students enjoy shopping. Of the stores in the mall, Rue 21 is a favorite among guys and girls. “We usually go to the ‘small,’” Benefield said. “Rue 21 is great, even though someone else may have what you have on.” “Rue 21 offers reasonably priced clothing. I bought a lot of hoodies for five dollars — it’s not bad,” junior marketing major Jerry King said. Another “small” fashion find is the Bealls outlet store. Students are finding that this store, much like TJ Maxx, offers them the variety and price they seek. “I found a pretty pink cardigan that was on sale at Bealls for five dollars,” Benefield said. When price is no longer a major factor and students have money to spare, some like to shop at Belks and other shops around town. “I buy my clothes at Belks and RJ Pope because they have similar fashion taste and stuff I like,” Chuka Okafor, senior biology major, said. “Sometimes it can be pricey, but if you catch them on a sale day you can get a good deal.” With most students spending four years or more at GSU, they are making the most of this small city. Sometimes being limited in choices, students are managing to find exactly what they need in Statesboro.
